Our Story

Our Story

At Stack & Burn, we believe a fire should be effortless β€” and the wood you burn should be the last thing you have to think about. That's why we obsess over every stage of the process, from the forests where our timber is sourced to the moment it arrives stacked neatly at your door.

Where Our Wood Comes From

We source our firewood from sustainably managed woodlands across the UK and Northern Europe. Every supplier we work with holds recognised forestry certification, ensuring that for every tree harvested, new growth is actively encouraged. We believe good firewood starts with responsible forestry β€” and we won't compromise on that.

Our logs are split to consistent sizes and selected for species known for their high energy density: predominantly hardwoods such as oak, ash, and birch. These species burn hotter, longer, and cleaner than softwoods, giving you more heat per log and less residue in your flue.

Why Kiln-Dried Matters

Moisture content is the single biggest factor in how well firewood burns. Wet or "seasoned" wood β€” even wood left outside for a year or two β€” can retain moisture levels above 25%, leading to:

  • Poor combustion β€” more smoke, less heat
  • Creosote build-up β€” a leading cause of chimney fires
  • Wasted fuel β€” energy is spent evaporating water rather than heating your home

Our kiln-dried firewood is dried in controlled, high-temperature kilns until moisture content falls consistently below 20% β€” and typically below 15%. At this level, logs ignite quickly, burn efficiently, and produce minimal smoke. The result is more heat, a cleaner flue, and a fire that actually performs.

Kiln drying also eliminates insects, mould, and fungi β€” so what arrives at your door is clean, ready-to-burn wood with no unpleasant surprises.

Our Quality Standards

Every batch of firewood we sell is tested for moisture content before it leaves us. We don't rely on estimates or seasonal assumptions β€” we measure. Our logs are:

  • Consistently sized for reliable stacking and loading
  • Free from excessive bark, rot, or debris
  • Packed securely to maintain dryness during transit
  • Ready to burn straight from delivery β€” no additional drying required

We hold ourselves to the Ready to Burn standard, the UK government-backed certification that guarantees wood fuel meets strict moisture and quality thresholds. When you see that mark, you know what you're getting.

Sustainability at the Heart of It

Wood is one of the few truly renewable energy sources β€” when managed responsibly. Burning kiln-dried hardwood from certified, well-managed woodland produces significantly lower particulate emissions than wet wood, and the carbon released is part of a natural cycle that replanting actively offsets.

We're committed to:

  • Sourcing only from certified sustainable woodlands
  • Minimising packaging waste across all deliveries
  • Choosing delivery partners who share our values on efficiency and route optimisation
  • Continuously reviewing our supply chain for environmental impact

We won't greenwash β€” but we will keep improving.
